Mobius Method

Math education has been around for millennia, but has struggled to evolve with digital capabilities. Online math tools have great potential, but are missing the engagement that only a human can bring. At Mobius, we believe that the best education comes from the best combination of human and digital teaching. To do that requires a new approach. The Mobius Method has been developed over thousands of hours of educating children on math at all levels.

The Core Tenets of the Mobius Method

01

Learning by Doing

Children learn math when they put pencil to paper. The Mobius Method emphasizes time spent on the work, and flips the lecture model upside down. Each problem is just a little more challenging than the one before, and the adaptive curriculum keeps each child at their ideal level. It’s only when an explanation is needed that a small skills lecture is used.

Unique Path for Every Child

If a child is bored or frustrated, they will disengage. When a classroom of 30 kids is being taught the same material, kids in the class may be ahead and bored, or behind and frustrated. The Mobius Method creates a curriculum per child to keep them at an ideal level of challenge. Just hard enough that with focus, they can find the solution and get the rush that comes from solving a tricky problem.

While kids can explore more challenging concepts if they are ready for them, they will also revisit core concepts regularly to push their young minds to recall the concept. This recall effort has been shown by neuroscience to be the core to long-term retention.

Confidence, Then Challenge

Confidence is vital to success in math. If a child believes they are “not a math kid” they will see every problem as additional proof that they don’t have the needed ability. At Mobius, we believe that every kid is a “math kid”, we just need to find the right level. Core skills are focused on to build speed and confidence, and progress happens only when ready.

When a child is ready to progress, however, arbitrary age or grade levels should not hold them back. More advanced kids in Mobius classes move into topics that are beyond grade level, with quick skill lectures to introduce any new topic. Challenging competition math problems are used to explore and develop deeper understanding of concepts.

Create Success Through Engagement

Math is hard work for many kids, we understand that. As a parent, you want your child to do the work, but it can be exhausting to fight them on it daily if you are teaching them yourself. Pencil-and-paper extracurricular math programs focused on repetition quickly lose kids' interest. At Mobius, we know that an engaged child is a child who is learning, and the role of our tutors is to keep that engagement level high.

Within a class, a tutor will choose from a wide variety of math activities, games, and challenges to keep interest and student engagement at a maximum. Your child does 45 minutes of intense math work, and you don’t have to battle them to make it happen.
